| FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS |
| Why don't the links work? Why does it say "More Sources Needed" or "0kb/0kb"? |
| Most people are used to web
links, which take your web browser to a specific place on the Internet and
which start to download from that place instantly. But Sig2Dat links don't
have any info on where the file is; it just starts the search for it on
the FastTrack network. And of course you need to have Sig2Dat on your
PC as well as a FastTrack client (Kazaa, KazaaLite, Grokster, iMesh);
it's no good clicking on the links if you don't have the programs that use
them. Because of the decentralised nature of FastTrack, you're only ever connected to a small percentage of users. If within that small percentage no-one's sharing the file in question, you'll get "More Sources Needed" & "0kb/0kb". But FastTrack is flexible and constantly changing, so new sources will appear sooner or later. To make it sooner, use a tool that automatically tries to find more sources, like DietKaza. The key thing is... be patient. It might take hours (or more) to find a source. Another possible reason why a link doesn't appear to work is that you need to COMPLETELY shut down your FastTrack program (by right-clicking its icon in your PC's system tray and selecting "Close KaZaA/Grokster/iMesh"), then restart it. Just closing the program window won't work. The file won't appear in your download window until your FastTrack program has been restarted. (Turning off & restarting client not necessary in recent versions of KaZaA Lite.) |
| Who's "Dummy@Dummy-net.com"? |
| Startfiles need to contain not only the file's hash, but also the username of the last person to be a source for that file. Because a Sig2Dat link has no previous "source", Sig2Dat inserts a fake username: Dummy@Dummy-net.com. The FastTrack program will try downloading from that 'source', not find it and then start looking for other sources. |
| Will I ruin or change the Hash if I change the file's name or details? |
| No. The hashing/identification system of FastTrack & Sig2Dat will recognise that file no matter what its name is. You can change the name, you can change its detailed info (in My KaZaA/My Media), and FastTrack/Sig2Dat will still know what it is. The only way to change a file's hash is to change the file itself: add, chop, change it etc. |
| Which option should I use? Normal style vs. HTML vs. ... |
| To make a link, there are 5
options. Here's a guide on which to choose: - When posting in a web forum, use the "... Style" or its hybrid. - When linking on a web page you're building, use the "Quicklink HTML Style" or its hybrid. - When inserting into a plain text document (e.g. e-mail), use the Normal Style text hash. - When posting many files together (e.g. all the songs from an album), consider using the Hybrid or Normal Style options. This allows people to get all the files with one copy & paste. |
| How can I use links to many files at once? |
| Quicklinks can only be used one at a time (i.e. you click on one, then you click on another and so on). But with Normal Style hashes and with hybrids, you can copy many at once (with Ctrl + C) and then in Sig2Dat press "Paste From Clipboard". All the files whose hash/hybrid you copied will be queued in your FastTrack program. So if someone posts every song on an album or every episode in a TV series in hash/hybrid form, you don't have click every single one, just copy & paste the whole bunch at once. |
